Best Books of 2018

Image
With 2018 rapidly coming to a close it is hard to resist looking back at all the amazing publications for children and youth that hit the shelves this year. As usual, it was a year of too many books and not enough time! I have compiled a list (as difficult as it was) of just some of the best books of 2018. I selected only from books that were purchased for Collingwood Public Library’s collection, and are fiction for ages 3 to 18 years. Picture Books Dear Girl , by Amy Krouse Rosenthal This beautiful book encourages readers to accept and love themselves as they are and advises them to be confident, curious, adaptable, and willing to speak up. The Rough Patch , by Brian Lies Farmer Evan and his dog do everything together and, especially, in the garden but when his dog passes away Evan lets his garden fill with weeds until a pumpkin vine brings new hope. Raina's Back!

Image
We literally cannot keep Raina Telgemeier’s graphic novels on our shelves! Her books are almost always checked out – each title averages about 13 checkouts per year. The library has replaced at least three of her books multiple times due to either wear and tear or theft. To say her books are popular would be an understatement. For both adoring fans and children’s librarians, publishing houses cannot pump out Telgemeier’s work fast enough. So it is with enthusiasm that I share the news that Raina will be spoiling us with TWO new titles in 2019.  Check out the announcement on Raina's website: https://goraina.com/blog/2018/10/2/guts   Here is a more in-depth interview with Raina by Vulture that took place at New York Comic Con last week: http://www.vulture.com/2018/10/raina-telgemeier-new-books.html

Apple season!

Image
We’ve had a bout of autumn weather in Collingwood this week – overcast skies, a cool breeze and cooler temperatures. Some of the trees are just starting to show those autumn hues of gold, red and orange, and at least one of my coworkers has had their first pumpkin spice latte. These are sure signs that the seasons are changing. Last week one of my regular Story Time families told me they went apple picking (a personal favourite activity of mine) and then made a pie from scratch. They were the inspiration behind this week’s Story Time theme of everything apples!    Craft supplies: Paper plates Red, green, or yellow tissue paper   Brown construction paper for stems Green construction paper for leaves Glue Popsicle stick for worm Googley eyes, if desired Exacto knife – ADULTS ONLY!
